On November 27, 2000, President Hariri made a visit to Syria to meet President Bachar El-Assad: “It is an eighty per cent regional visit” as PM Hariri, described. Mr. Hariri informed President Assad of the outcomes of his Arab tour. He did not make any statement regarding Lebanese issues he could have discussed with the Syrian President. He made emphasis on the necessity of good relations with the Syrian brethren. He also noted that Lebanese-Syrian relations should not be subject to daily reviews.
On the Syrian side, Gebran Kourieh, the Presidential spokesman said the Assad-Hariri meeting tackled the Israeli escalation and aggressive action against Palestinian people, in addition to Arab contacts.
The visit to Syria had a notable political aspect, unlike the previous one (November 17); which was mostly economic.
The visit to Syria led to many achievements: an agreement to allow imports from Lebanon irrespective of their origin, a quick promulgation of a law on private banks in Syria, taking the necessary procedures to finish construction works on the gasoline between Homs and Tripoli, the selling of Syrian gas to Lebanon as soon as possible, rehabilitation of the Iraqi-Syrian-Lebanese pipeline in the Tripoli-Homs section, the rehabilitation of the Akkar-Tripoli railway and Rayak-Damascus railway, undertaking required procedures to launch electrical linkages between Al-Hama and Ksara, and providing Lebanese buses operating between the two countries with heating oil.
PM Hariri asserted that buying Syrian gas is very beneficial to Lebanon and “whoever tries to represent Lebanese-Syrian relation as favoring Syria’s interests is distorting the truth”.
