P.M. Rafic Hariri congratulated Iranian President Mohammed Khatami for his recent election victory, during a trip to Tehran where he held talks with the Iranian president and Iranian vice-president Hassan Habibi on bilateral relations and Middle East developments. Mr Hariri was accompagnied by the head of the Progressive Socialist Party Deputy Walid Jumblatt.
During the visit P.M. Hariri proposed drafting an agreement to encourage investments in both countries and lifts barriers preventing the flow of goods. The Premier cited data indicating a rise in transportation and mobility between Lebanon and Iran. President Khatami then gave instructions to the authorities in Iran to draft an agreement with Lebanon “to lift administrative and other obstacles” in the way of strengthening relations.
The Prime Minister discussions with president Khatami were attended by MP Jumblatt, Lebanon’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mansour, Iranian vice-president Hassan Habibi, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed el Sadr, Iran Housing Minister Abdel Ali Zada and Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon Mohammad Ali Sobhani. Mr Hariri conveyed President Emile Lahoud ‘s greetings to the Iranian President who promised to visit Lebanon soon.
