Deputy Bahia Hariri proposed a political initiative to press for the full implementation of the Taif Accord, at a meeting of assassinated former Premier Rafic Hariri’s Beirut Decision Bloc in Parliament in the presence of deputies representing the Mustaqbal Movement. Deputy Hariri’s initiative is based on the Taif Accord’s national conciliation pact.
Deputies praised and supported the initiative. They reiterated demands for an international probe into the murder of martyred Prime Minister Hariri, to reveal the identity of those who planned, incited, and implemented the bombing. They also called for the resignation of security chiefs.
Officials at the meeting said clauses of the Taif Accord cannot be arbitrarily chosen for implementation, making it clear that the lack of proper execution of the 1989 agreement, which ended Lebanon’s war, led the current political turmoil. They stressed that the proper and full implementation of the Taif Accord will bolster national unity, preserve civil peace and rebuild constitutional institutions on the basis of the separation of powers.
At the meeting, deputies urged Lebanese from all regions to take part in a sit-in next Monday to commemorate the first month of the slain leader’s murder.
