Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad urged the Lebanese to unite and "carry on the great work of rebuilding Lebanon," after offering his condolences, alongside his spouse, to Mrs. Nazek Hariri and Mr. Chafic Hariri. Attending the Koreitem gathering also were Miss Hind Hariri, former minister Fuad Siniora and Malaysian consul in Lebanon Omar Jundi.

Dr. Mahathir said Mr. Hariri's murder was "a great loss," and described the martyred leader as "a friend" and "a great man, who has done so much for Lebanon." "I have always thought that the people of Lebanon loves him, but apparently there are people who are never satisfied with what they benefit from a man such as Mr. Hariri," the former Malaysian Premier told reporters.

He also said he hoped that Mr. Hariri's death "will not be in vain and that the people of Lebanon will unite to carry on the great work of rebuilding Lebanon, that he has started." Dr. Mahathir paid tribute to the slain leader, saying: "I pray that his soul will rest in peace and I pray that his contribution to Lebanon and to the Islamic world will forever be in the hearts of all the good Muslims, and of all people who understand his dedication to Lebanon, to Islam and to the Muslim world."
