Prime Minister Rafic Hariri hailed the formation of a national concord government today saying it provides an opportunity for the Lebanese to renew confidence in the State, and exercise real executive authority to manage the country and the affairs of the Lebanese. He said the government is also testament of coexistence, but made clear the challenges ahead are numerous and urged cooperation among government members.
Addressing the Lebanese after meeting President Michel Sleiman in the Baabda Presidential Palace, following the formation of the government, the Prime Minister said it was time to embark on conciliation and hard work, to prove to the world that the country is an example of conciliation and not a venue for political and sectarian conflict. He stressed that the new government could either renew confidence in State institutions or could degenerate into yet another failure by the Lebanese to achieve accord.
The Prime Minister said conciliation means cooperation, coordination and participation, and that the government must exercise its executive authority and not drown in political crises, adding national interest should supercede personal and sectarian gains. Mr. Hariri said while previous experiences have been discouraging, and Lebanon had suffered from massive unrest over the past few years, the resilience and the steadfastness of the Lebanese allowed the country to prevail. He made clear that the new government provides a path for salvation to end chaos, migration and foreign intervention. Among the government’s top challenges, the Prime Minister said, are modernization, stopping corruption, the economy, Israeli threats, and commitment to the full implementation of the Taif Agreement. He highlighted the need for cooperation with Arab countries to achieve Arab conciliation and restore the country’s Arab and international stature, and said his sole promise is to cooperate with everyone and work hard to renew confidence in Lebanon.
